The Real Family Clutter [Murder]

Pre-Murder:
Dick Hickock first began his plot to rob the Clutter's while hearing about their supposed money within the house from a cellmate, Floyd Wells. Wells would eventually turn out to provide a tip that helped police hone in on Hickock and Smith as the murders. Once released from jail, Hickock devised the rest of his plan in cahoots with a friend and former inmate, Perry Smith. The two prepared for the robbery and murder while driving from Hickock's home in Edgerton and purchased gloves, rope, tape, and a pocket knife.

To Murder.... AND BEYOND!
Smith and Hickock took in a shotgun and knife while entering into the Clutter residence through and unlocked door. They captured the patriarch of the family and when he told them the truth, that there was no safe, Smith and Hickock took Mr. Clutter along with his wife and two children and locked them in a bathroom while searching the house. Because they wanted no witnesses, the Clutter's were all shot in the head with the shotgun [Mr. Clutter first had is throat slit]. The killers came out with a whopping sum of money, somewhere between $50 and $75, binoculars, and a car radio. The two latter items they sold to a cop in Mexico City and these items helped to clue the authories into Hickock and Smith as the murders.

Smith and Hickock were hanged in April of 1965.
